Sourcing actors for Cumha

Cumha will have a minimal cast with three people at most; The main boy, the girl, and the second boy, who is only in it for a few seconds at the end.

The most logical course of action was to go through our list of friends at first, as the characters of Cumha are of a similar age to us, the teenagers creating the film.

For the girl, we contacted my friend Ríbh Brownlee. She did drama for GCSE and also outside of school, and was eager to help out where she could. Ríbh is small and slight, with a heap of auburn curls, which ties into the story we're basing Cumha off of being an Irish folk tale.

Ríbh Brownlee
Role: The Girl
Height: 5'1
Build: Slight
Appearance: Pale complexion, curly auburn hair, hazel eyes
Experience: Several stage productions

We initially had plans to use another of our friends who did drama, Eamonn, to be our main character, but this plan fell through. In the end we asked Calum Hanna, a friend of Jennifer, a member of the Cumha production team.

Calum contrasts nicely to Ríbh, as he's much taller then her, and they make a visually interesting pair on screen.

Calum Hanna
Role: The Boy
Height: 6'2
Build: Broad shoulders
Appearance: Ruddy complexion, short dark hair
Experience: None

For our final character, we asked the help of Odhrán Doherty a mutual friend of everyone on the production team and also Ríbh. Like Calum, Odhrán is much taller than Ríbh but unlike Calum, he has pale eyes, and glasses, putting the two boys into a nice contrast.

Odhrán Doherty
Role: The Other Boy
Height: 5'11
Build: Built
Appearance: Pale complexion, very short dark hair, pale eyes
Experience: None

So far none of the characters have names, and we might leave it like this. In a story as short and as compressed as this one, it appears more universal if we leave the characters without a solid identity.

Update on filming 3

Our main actor Calum has dropped out completely. We found a new actor very last minute,  Michael Kelly , whose willing to jump in and fill his role. Michael Kelly  Role: The Boy  Height: 6' Build: Lanky Appearance: Pale complexion, medium length brown hair, pale eyes  Experience: None This leaves the shots we took earlier and edited pretty much useless, which is not ideal but there's no time to reshoot them and get the photos printed for this Sunday.  We can use one dream sequence shot of Ríbh on her own which is still useable, so that's what we'll have to work with.  This could work as it implies that The Boy and The Girl don't have any relationship at all and makes the twist ending a scarier reveal. It wasn't what we planned, but we can work with it.

Poster progress

We initially had three ideas for our poster: a smashed clock, that is seen in the opening shot of Cumha , a screenshot from the movie of the girl's face smiling over the flowers, and a picture of The Girl with a dart through it, all of which are pictured below. We first ruled out using a screenshot from the movie, as this isn't a very professional approach, and then decided not to go along the lines of using the dart as a) the dart board never appears in movie and b) it implies that the movie would be a slasher or horror, which it is not.  Here are the photos we took after we smashed the clock, a symbol of The Boy's hopes and fantasies, as a hint to people looking at the poster of what is to happen.  At first, we couldn't decide between the third or fourth photo, so I decided to do some trials with the third photo, as it's my favourite photo, but it wasn't portrait, as most posters ar...
